Filey and Cayton Bay

Filey and Cayton Bay

We drove to the east coast yesterday and enjoyed good warm sunny weather in Filey, Cayton Bay and the surrounding area.

The journey there took just over one and a half hours for 80 miles, the best we have ever managed and the whole day was great.

My grandparents had a static caravan at Brown’s caravan park when I was a kid and we went there often, so it is always a trip down memory lane to go there again – even just for the day.

We started off in Filey, bought 8 cakes in Sterchis (the world best cake shop) plus crayfish sandwiches and then, after a good walk around, went to the caravan park in question where we had our lunch whilst sat on a bench overlooking a playfield. It has significance to me.

From there to the Mere, a once stunning park and water park, now left to fall into an astoundingly bad state of repair – I will never visit it again. Scarborough council – you should be ashamed, it is a disgrace and it was once a centre point of your city. If in Leeds, it would be a major draw (as it once was) and would see hundreds if not thousands of visitors per day.

We then went to Humanby Gap, a massive beach, where we used to go with Whisky, our fantastic dog, and walked on the beach for around an hour.

Finally, we had a drink in the Star pub followed by fish and chips from the almost adjacent shop – they are still the best fish and chips I have ever had – a great day. I just wish I could turn the clock back over 30 years and do it all again as a kid with my sister and parents – the best time ever.
